Why Men’s Health Matters to Me More Than Ever

As Father’s Day approaches, I’ve been thinking a lot about the men we love—and how often they put everyone else’s needs before their own.

This isn’t just a Father’s Day message.

It’s a message for fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, grandfathers, young men struggling with stress and depression, athletes, veterans, first responders, and every man who believes he’ll “take care of himself later.”

Because later doesn’t always come. My own father died at 72 due to stress and heart failure. My mother’s partner Roger died last year and he was six years younger than my mother. Men in the United States still die years earlier than women. According to the CDC, the average American man lives nearly five years less than the average American woman. While many factors contribute to this longevity gap, we know that physical inactivity, chronic stress, heart disease, depression, poor sleep, and lack of preventive self-care play significant roles.

This topic has become deeply personal for me Because my mother recently lost her partner of 23 years. As I mentioned it was very unexpected He was six years younger than she was, healthy by most appearances, active, engaged in life, and looking forward to many more years ahead. Yet he died unexpectedly in his early 80s.They were flying all over the world, hiking and enjoying life. Although he did no yoga or strength training.and he certainly didn’t believe in meditation.

Like many families, we’ve experienced firsthand how suddenly life can change.

These losses have reinforced something I have spent my entire career teaching: health is not something we can take for granted.

Many men are willing to work hard, provide for their families, coach their children’s teams, fix everyone’s problems, and carry enormous responsibilities. Yet they often ignore their own physical and emotional well-being until a health crisis occurs.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among men. Rates of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and chronic stress continue to rise. Many men suffer silently because they have been taught that asking for help is a sign of weakness.

It isn’t.

Taking care of your health is one of the strongest things a man can do.

That’s why this Father’s Day isn’t simply about fathers.

It’s about every man who deserves the opportunity to live a longer, healthier, more active life.

It’s about helping men maintain their mobility so they can continue hiking, golfing, traveling, playing with grandchildren, and doing the activities they love.

It’s about helping men manage stress before it becomes hypertension, heart disease, burnout, or depression.

It’s about improving strength, balance, flexibility, and resilience so that the years ahead are not just longer—but better.

And it’s why I believe yoga belongs in every man’s longevity toolkit.

Yoga is not about becoming more flexible than the next person.

It’s about preserving movement.

Preserving independence.

Supporting heart health.

Reducing stress.

Improving sleep.

Building resilience.

And ultimately increasing both lifespan and healthspan.

The goal isn’t simply to add years to life.

The goal is to add life to those years.

This Father’s Day, let’s celebrate the men in our lives by giving them something far more valuable than another tie, tool, or gadget.

Let’s give them tools that can help them live stronger, move better, feel better, and stay healthy for the people who love them.

Because the best gift we can give the men we love may be more healthy years together.
