Peace, Energy, and Anandamide: The Benefits of PEA

Peace, Energy, and Anandamide: The Benefits of PEA

As yoga practitioners, we don’t need to read the studies to know that a regular practice has immense mood enhancing and physical benefits – we’re already hooked! When we begin our practice and soften into our breath, we all know what’s to come: A sense of well-being and a physical awakening we can count on; some kind of positive shift no matter what we brought to the mat that day.

The science on the benefits of breath plus asana is endless and undeniable. From the teachings of the Veda’s, to rigorous modern methods, it’s well-known that physical activities such as yoga can stimulate neurotransmitters associated with pleasure and focus, such as dopamine and serotonin. At the same time, we enjoy the benefits of activation of the parasympathetic nervous system which puts us in to a state of rest and restoration. We learn in class to take the practices off the mat and into our day; what else can do to say in this open, awake, yet relaxed state?

One of the answers lies within a fatty, hormone-like substance that we naturally produce throughout our bodies called “PEA”, which stands for palmitoylethanolamide. Discovered over 60 years ago, we know that we produce PEA in our bodies, especially after physical exertion.  It is also possible to derive small amounts from certain foods such as chicken, egg yolk, olive oil, and soybean oil. PEA can improve mood and promote a feeling of well-being by influencing many of the same neurotransmitters we feel the benefits of through our yoga practice. Additionally, PEA can positively impact the balance of the neurotransmitter anandamide, also known as the ‘bliss molecule’. Perhaps we’re feeling the effects of blissful anandamide during deep savasana after a challenging practice.

In optimal health, the body’s natural production of PEA is in a state of homeostasis. This balance can sometimes be compromised due to negative ongoing stressors such as emotional strain or physical overexertion. Given all the benefits of this amazing substance, it’s no surprise that PEA also supports our bodies nervous and muscular systems and can soothe physical discomfort during times of stress and strain.*

Like many neurotransmitters, our bodies may not produce enough PEA and supplementation can support this delicate balance, calm discomfort, and promote optimal levels for wellbeing.* Typical PEA products on the market are synthetically sourced and may use harsh solvents in their manufacture like Toluene, a chemical toxin found within paint thinner. Enzyme Science offers a natural solution – supplemental PEA derived from safflower seed.

Enzyme Science has formulated PEA+; this powerful ingredient is combined with Meriva Phytosome®, one of the most highly researched, clinically studied forms of curcumin. Meriva promotes better delivery of PEA to enhance absorption as well as providing additional support for occasional physical strain (too many chaturangas anyone?). *

Nothing replaces time and experience in practice; it’s a dedication to a way of life that reaps rewarding benefits for body, mind, and soul throughout our lives. However, we all have those moments we need a little extra support to reside in a less stressed physical and mental state; PEA+ offers a gentle, natural solution.*
